This document deals with the classification of soils for earthworks and foundation engineering based on the principles stated in DIN EN ISO 14688 (all parts). It does not apply to rock. This document groups soil types into soil groups with approximately the same material composition, such as particle size ranges and plastic properties, and similar soil physical properties, such as shear strength, compressibility, and susceptibility to erosion. The informative Appendix A additionally contains an evaluation of the soil groups with regard to their suitability for civil engineering purposes.
