Stand4Bio

Mapping and feasibility study for standards on biotechnology, bio-based materials, bio-based and wood-derived products

Standardization plays a critical role in fostering a sustainable and competitive bioeconomy. Therefore, the European Innovation Council and SMEs Executive Agency (EISMEA) has commissioned SIS to conduct a comprehensive review of standards in bio-based products and industrial biotechnology.

A circular bioeconomy is essential to achieving the objectives of the European Green Deal and other EU commitments. By reducing dependence on fossil resources, we strengthen Europe’s resilience and self-sufficiency while reducing climate impacts. The Stand4Bio project aims to map and evaluate existing standards and identify the need for new or updated standards in bio-based products and industrial biotechnology. The scope includes standards for bio-based materials and products, industrial biotechnology, wood-based products, and biomass. The goal is to provide guidance and support for continued development that drives innovation, competitiveness, and sustainability.

The project includes

  • evaluate standards for bio-based products, materials, and biotechnology, focusing on sustainability, bio-based content, communication, and specific functionalities or test methods relevant to bio-based innovations
  • feasibility study for new or revised standards for bio-based products, materials, and biotechnology (focusing on industrial processes, excluding topics such as biomedicines and health biotechnology)

All activities is carried out in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, including technical committees within CEN.

News and calender

SIS will regularly share project updates and organize consultations with stakeholders, including through surveys and workshops.
