New ISO proposal to strengthen children’s rights

Icelandic Standards has in cooperation with Swedish Institute for Standards proposed a new ISO Technical Committee on Children’s Rights.

The purpose of this committee is to develop international standards to support implementation of protection, provision, and participation rights for children, aligned with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). It will cooperate with relevant ISO committees and existing global frameworks.

Despite the UNCRC’s near-universal ratification, implementation remains inconsistent, especially in safeguarding and participation. This TC will provide practical, measurable tools for governments, businesses, and institutions to embed children’s rights into policies and operations, improving compliance and accountability. Research shows compliance often depends on domestic frameworks, yet many countries lack clear operational standards. Reports highlight fragmented laws and limited resources as major barriers. ISO standards can address these gaps, strengthen monitoring, and promote integrated systems for child protection.

This proposal is currently out for ballot among ISO members. For more details, please visit the dedicated page on Icelandic Standards.
