Goal 11 - Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Never before have so many people lived in cities, over half of the world’s population now live in cities and that number is expected to increase to 70% by 2050. This puts a lot of pressure on ecological and social aspects as for example lack of housing, increased air pollution, power supply, and waste management become even more pressing issues to attend.

ISO/TC 268 Sustainable cities and communities is directly working with goal number 11 and are committed to contribute to this goal. They develop management standards which will contribute to the sustainability of cities and communities. It involves aspects of technical solutions, smart IT, transport but also how to make both urban and rural cities and communities more resilient. The ISO standard ISO 37120 Sustainable development of communities -- Indicators for city services and quality of life currently under development is the principle standard for ISO/TC 268. In Sweden the adaptation to sustainability of cities is well on its way. In the Swedish mirror committee SIS/TK 588 Hållbara smarta städer och samhällen experts from 15 companies, governmental agencies and academic institutions are actively contributing to drafting the standards which will affect the possibilities of fulfilling the indicators in goal 11 and also affect the environment for the world today as well as coming generations.
