Scope and objective
The scope of the committee, in the area of robots and robotic devices, covers standardization of:
- Definition - characterization
- Terminology
- Performance testing methods
- Safety
- Mechanical interfaces and end effectors
- Programming methods
- Requirements for information exchange
Standardization comprises the robot itself (the manipulator with actuators and the control system with hardware and software) and its end effectors.
The current objectives are:
- Revised safety standard for industrial robots. ISO 10218-1 about robots was published in 2006 and a revision has started. ISO 10218-2 about the robot system and integration is under development.
- New safety standard for robots in personal care. The first step is non-medical applications while parallel preparations are being made on medical applications.
- Additional standards on service robots. These may include aspects other than safety and applications other than personal care robots.
- Revised vocabulary. This has been initiated from the service robot work, but also includes a harmonisation with the industrial vocabulary (ISO 8373).
