Join us in Stockholm!
It is a great privilege for me to invite you to take part in the 25th ISO General Assembly in Stockholm, Sweden in September 2002.
Since we are all part of the world standards society, we all know about the benefits that come out of the standardization process and the adoption of new standards. Nevertheless, there are some issues that all of us involved in the standardization business can be focused on. I think of the involvement in supplying means to support the developing countries in performing a better trade ratio through standards. I also think of the positive environmental impacts of standardization.
During the General Assembly, 23–28 September in Stockholm, we will address two opportunities.
“Participation of developing countries in international standardization” is one of the topics and another is “Strategies for Energy and Environment – What can standards do?”
Our ambition is to make the General Assembly contribute to issues that all ISO members always will need to focus on.
Come visit Stockholm the capital of our beautiful country and home of the Nobel Prize. Stockholm, a medieval city built on 15 islands, surrounded by water and an archipelago, is a melting pot of history, art, design, and music and state-of-the-art technology. I can assure you that Stockholm can offer something for everyone.
The SIS and the ISO team will do their utmost to ensure that you have a constructive and enjoyable stay in Stockholm. The 25th General Assembly will involve work, discussions, meetings and international fellowship, as well as enjoyment and entertainment. I hope you will join us in Stockholm.
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to the 25th ISO General Assembly, to Stockholm and to SIS!

Message from the ISO President
I am pleased to welcome our members from all around the world to the 25th ISO General Assembly in Stockholm. It is an honour to hold this year’s meeting in this beautiful, thriving metropolis where old world landmarks and cutting-edge designs are in perfect harmony.
Sweden is a country where the building of a robust and ecologically sustainable society is at the top of the agenda. In the past and the present, Sweden has spread its vision for a new world paradigm, one of environmental and social consciousness which has effectively been turned into action.
At ISO, we take it as one of our aims to empower businesses, consumers and other stakeholders with tools of knowledge to help them continue to drive their development objectives while maintaining a minimal adverse environmental impact. The use of International Standards to support the production and distribution of clean and sustainable energy in today’s world is a topic we will be debating here in Stockholm during a half-day open session. Increasingly, we see that sustainability is moving up the economic and political agendas both in the public and private sector. It is clear that the concept of sustainability has grown to become one of collective responsibility as well as an essential framework for guiding business in the 21st century.
Another major concern at ISO, to be addressed during a one-day workshop in Stockholm, is related to the participation level of our members from developing nations. Of the 140 ISO members, more than 100 are developing nations, yet the majority of them do not have a sufficient level of standardization infrastructure. It is therefore essential that we strive to secure an adequate balance of participation of all ISO members. We see it as one of our prime objectives to support our members from developing nations through extensive and focused assistance programmes and by establishing the appropriate technological infrastructure for them to participate effectively in the standards process.
As the representatives of ISO members from 140 countries will gather in Stockholm, we shall take a new look at these challenges, and discuss and decide how to reach our common goals. I wish you all a memorable and productive stay.
